Daytona Fire
Tuesday February 28 2012

It's pretty obvious that this was a freak accident involving Juan Pablo Montoya and the jet dryer working under a caution flag around lap 160. While it was obvious that the quick response vehicles were ill prepared to fight a kerosene/diesel fire of that magnitude with their dry chemical extinguishers alone, the back up plan with fire apparatus and foam agents worked as planned and the fire eventually went out . The track damage was minimal and the cleanup and resumption of racing was a success.

I will say that the current NASCAR plan of not allowing a wet agent to be used in these types of incidents on their first response trucks may have to be re-evaluated during the post incident analysis and critique. I am sure they will also rethink their yellow flag caution operations with safety vehicles and competitors on the track at the same time.

I do know that there are some pretty dedicated and knowledgeable fire safety and rescue personnel who preplan these hazards as much as possible during their personnel staffing and response plan briefings. This one incident might have been "outside the box a little" as to the possibility and the magnitude it became. But...they rose to the occasion and perservered once again. My hat's off to those who put their butts on the line to help make these races safer for all.

We'll all learn from this and add it to the list of things that could happen on the race track in the future and be better prepared and quicker to respond if it happens again. We're just happy to know that no one was seriously injured in this incident or the other accidents during the race.
