RSI participated in a few SFI conferences and specification meetings where we proposed that language be added to the new seat specs that are in the draft process to provide for quicker methods to make emergency access to occupants easier for track safety crews.
It was also learned from Dr. John Melvin that recent crash test data has proven that use of 6 and 7 point restraints were reducing many injuries that originally were thought to have been caused by certain head and neck restraint design problems.
The introduction of a second shoulder belt has also reduced slippage problems with the HANS and added another level of safety for inversion type crashes, but requires separate mounting points to be effective.
Other devices couldn't pass the 38.1 spec without the 6 point system or added crotch belt attached based on crash testing results. We hope to have more info shortly on this topic.
RSI also made contact with several racing fuel companies at the show regarding their use of ethanol in racing fuels. Ethanol fires are a major concern to the fire industry because of the methods of transportation used to ship product and the difficulty extinguishing them.
Specific extinguishing agents have been developed for this fuel and we wanted to see where it would have an impact on racing and track safety crews fire extinguishing methods and efforts as we know it. Stay tuned for new tech data on this subject.
